By the Puck Drop Prints team. Updated October 2026.
Custom hockey socks are $20 a pair when you add them to a team order at Puck Drop Prints, and they come in nine sizes from Youth S to XXL. On a 15-player team that is $300 on top of the jerseys, about 20 to 36% more, depending on which jersey your team picked.
That is the whole answer. Every other custom sock page on the internet will make you fill out a quote form to learn it.
Here is the part nobody warns you about: socks are the piece of the kit that decides whether your team looks like a team or looks like eleven guys who happened to show up. You can drop $1,485 on reversibles and still look like a beer league pickup squad if half the bench is wearing whatever black socks were in the bin at the rink.
Hockey socks are the long, footless knit sleeves that cover your shin guards from ankle to thigh and carry your team colours on your legs. They are not athletic socks. They do not go on your feet. Every season someone finds this out the hard way in a dressing room, and every season the boys let them hear about it.
Matching custom socks are $20 a pair on a team order, the cheapest item on the Puck Drop Prints price list.
How much do custom hockey socks cost?
Custom hockey socks cost $20 a pair with a team order. A team order is six jerseys or more, and the published $20 price is quoted with a team order. Fifteen pairs is $300. Twelve pairs is $240. The price does not change based on which jersey type your team picked.
That last detail is worth sitting with, because it changes what socks cost in percentage terms. Socks are a flat $20 whether your jerseys were $55 or $99, so they add roughly 36% to a roller order and only 20% to a reversible one.
What a 15-player team pays
| Jersey type | Jerseys | + 15 pairs of socks | Jersey + socks, per player | Socks add |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roller, $55 | $825 | $1,125 | $75 | 36% |
| Sublimated, $65 | $975 | $1,275 | $85 | 31% |
| Reversible, $99 | $1,485 | $1,785 | $119 | 20% |
| Pro tackle twill, $99 | $1,485 | $1,785 | $119 | 20% |
Want the full uniform? Uni Kits are priced per player at 6+ players: Sublimated kit $100 (reg $120), Tackle Twill kit $134 (reg $154), Reversible kit $134 (reg $154), and the Roller kit (jersey + roller pants) $100. Pant shells are $35 and socks $20 on their own. See the pricing page, or start building yours in the jersey customizer.
Socks are $20 a pair with a team order. Team minimum is six jerseys. Names, numbers and free worldwide shipping are included on every jersey type.
The full breakdown for every jersey type lives on the custom hockey jersey pricing page, and the per-player math is worked through in detail in what custom hockey jerseys actually cost.
What size hockey socks should you order?
Puck Drop Prints publishes nine sock sizes, from Youth S to XXL. Column A on the size chart runs from 18 inches to 34 inches in exact two-inch steps, and column B runs from 17.25 to 26 inches. Measure a sock you already own, laid flat, and match it to the chart rather than guessing from your jersey size.
| Size | A (inches) | B (inches) |
|---|---|---|
| Youth S | 18 | 17.25 |
| Youth M | 20 | 17.5 |
| Youth L | 22 | 18.75 |
| Youth XL | 24 | 19.75 |
| S | 26 | 21 |
| M | 28 | 21.75 |
| L | 30 | 22.75 |
| XL | 32 | 24 |
| XXL | 34 | 26 |
Lay flat to measure. Measurements are approximate and in inches. The live version, alongside the jersey and pant shell charts, is on the Puck Drop Prints size charts page.
Now the useful part, and it is the thing most captains get wrong. Puck Drop Prints publishes 26 jersey sizes and 9 sock sizes. Those two charts are not measuring the same person. A jersey is sized on chest width and sleeve length; a sock is sized on leg length. Two guys in the same L jersey can easily need different socks, because one of them is 5'8" and one of them is 6'2".
The other tell is in the steps. Column A climbs by exactly two inches at every single size, while column B moves in uneven jumps of anywhere from a quarter inch to two inches. The chart is not scaling both dimensions together, which is another reason to measure instead of extrapolating.
So: do not collect sock sizes by asking "what jersey size are you." Ask for the sock measurement directly, on the same form as everything else. Collecting sizes, names and numbers from a full roster has a copy-paste template that already has a column for it.
Socks are designed alongside the jersey, so the colours and stripes are drawn from the same artwork, and logo design is free with a team order.
How do you measure for hockey socks?
Measure from mid-thigh, roughly where the bottom of your hockey pants sits, straight down to the top of your skate boot, standing up, over the shin guard and in the pants you actually play in. Compare that length to the chart, or measure a sock you already own laid flat.
A hockey sock is a footless knit tube that runs from the bottom of the pant to the top of the skate, covering the shin guard and holding it in place. There is no foot in it, so anyone telling you to order by shoe size is guessing.
- Measure over the shin guard, not over bare leg. The guard adds bulk and the sock has to clear it.
- Measure flat, not stretched. Knit socks stretch a long way, and a stretched measurement will talk you into a size too small.
- Between two sizes, go up. A sock an inch long tucks under the pant and nobody notices. A sock an inch short leaves bare shin guard showing all game.
What size hockey socks do you wear over shin guards?
Size to the shin guard, not to the leg. Guards typically run 10 to 17 inches, and a longer guard needs a longer sock, which is why two players the same height can wear different socks. If your guard tops out just under the kneecap, your normal size is fine. If you run a long guard that overlaps the bottom of your pant, size up one.
Goalies almost always size up. Goalie pads are taller and wider than player guards, and a player-length sock will ride up over them by the second period.
Do your socks have to match the jersey?
No rule forces it, and most adult leagues will not say a word. But matching socks are the cheapest upgrade in the entire kit: $20 a pair against a jersey that starts at $55, and they are the piece a spectator actually sees moving. Mismatched socks undo a good jersey design faster than anything else on the ice.
Because the socks are designed at the same time as the jersey, the stripe pattern and colours come off the same artwork rather than being approximated afterward. Custom logo design is free with a team order, and the team keeps the artwork for future orders, which matters more than it sounds, because it means next season's socks can match this season's exactly.
Youth and school teams get the most out of this, since a bench of matching legs reads as "organised programme" to every parent in the stands. There is more on that in the coach's guide to youth hockey team jerseys.
The counter-argument is real, though. If your team already owns a pile of plain socks in the right colour and the budget is genuinely tight, put the $300 into the jerseys. Socks are the upgrade, not the foundation.
Are custom socks actually worth $20 a pair?
Compare it to the alternative. A single replacement jersey ordered on its own after production closes is $85 for a roller or sublimated sweater. That means four pairs of custom socks cost $80, less than one late jersey. At $20 a pair, socks are the cheapest item on the Puck Drop Prints price list.
Put differently: the entire sock order for a 15-player team is $300. That is roughly the cost of three and a half late jersey reorders. Spread across a season of eighteen or twenty games, matching socks work out to under a dollar a game per player, which is less than the rink charges for a bad coffee.
Where it stops being worth it is a one-off. If you are kitting a bachelor party or a single charity game and the sweaters are the whole point, socks are a nice-to-have. If the team is playing a full season together, they pay for themselves in how the team looks in every photo anyone posts.
When do you need to add socks to the order?
Before the order goes into production. Puck Drop Prints' FAQ states it plainly: "as long as we have not sent your order into production, you can add to it." Jerseys run 4 to 5 weeks for roller, sublimated and reversible, and 5 to 6 weeks for pro tackle twill, so the window to add socks is the design stage, not the production stage.
In practice this means socks should be on the roster spreadsheet from day one, next to name, number and jersey size. Adding a column costs you nothing. Chasing eleven guys for a sock size three weeks later costs you a Tuesday evening.
The published price is $20 a pair with a team order, and the price list does not publish a sock-only figure. If your team needs socks after the jerseys have shipped, ask before you assume, do not plan around it. The beer league bag checklist covers the rest of what should be in the bag before your first skate.
How do you keep custom hockey socks from dying in one season?
Wash them the same way you wash the jersey: cold water, inside out, no fabric softener, hang to dry. Heat is what kills knit socks and printed graphics, a dryer on high will shrink the knit and dull the colours faster than any amount of ice time will. Hanging them costs you thirty seconds.
The other killer is leaving them in the bag. A sock that goes back into a sealed hockey bag wet stays wet until Thursday, and that is how a dressing room develops its reputation. Take them out, hang them up, and your teammates will chirp you about something else instead.
Skate guards and velcro are the third enemy. Loose velcro on shin guards or pant shells snags knit socks constantly, so close the straps before the socks go anywhere near them.
Buying two pairs per player is also worth considering. Socks are the fastest thing in the beer league bag to develop a hole, and a second pair costs $20 in the original order.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom hockey socks cost?
Custom hockey socks at Puck Drop Prints are $20 a pair when added to a team order. A team order is a minimum of six jerseys. Fifteen pairs of custom socks costs $300, and twelve pairs costs $240. The $20 price is the same regardless of which jersey type the team orders, from the $55 roller through the $99 reversible.
What size hockey socks should I order?
Puck Drop Prints publishes nine hockey sock sizes: Youth S, Youth M, Youth L, Youth XL, S, M, L, XL and XXL. Column A of the size chart runs from 18 inches at Youth S to 34 inches at XXL, in two-inch steps. The most reliable method is to lay a hockey sock you already own flat, measure it, and match that number to the chart.
Do hockey socks go over or under the shin guards?
Hockey socks go over the shin guards. The guard sits directly against the leg, the sock pulls over the top of it, and the sock is held up by sock tape, a garter belt or the velcro tabs on hockey pants.
Can I order custom hockey socks without jerseys?
The published Puck Drop Prints price for custom socks is $20 a pair with a team order, and the pricing page does not list a standalone sock price. Teams planning to buy socks on their own, without a jersey order, should ask before budgeting for it rather than assuming the $20 figure applies. Contact Puck Drop Prints directly for that situation.
Can you add socks to a hockey jersey order after placing it?
Yes, within a window. The Puck Drop Prints FAQ states that "as long as we have not sent your order into production, you can add to it." Since jerseys take 4 to 5 weeks for roller, sublimated and reversible, and 5 to 6 weeks for pro tackle twill, the safe time to add socks is during the design stage, before production begins.
How should custom hockey socks be washed?
Wash custom hockey socks in cold water, inside out, with no fabric softener, and hang them to dry. High dryer heat shrinks knit hockey socks and dulls printed colours faster than normal wear does. Socks left damp inside a closed hockey bag between skates develop odour and break down sooner, so they should be hung up after every game.
Do custom socks have to match the team jersey?
No league rule requires matching socks in most adult recreational hockey, but matching socks are the least expensive way to make a team look uniform. At $20 a pair against a jersey starting at $55, socks are the cheapest item in a custom kit. Socks designed alongside the jersey draw colours and stripes from the same artwork, so the match is exact.
Getting your team's socks sorted
Add a sock column to the roster spreadsheet, get the measurements before the design is approved, and the whole thing costs $20 a player and one extra conversation. Skip it, and you will spend the season looking at a bench with four different shades of black on it.
Start Your Order and the socks get designed alongside the jerseys, from the same artwork, in the same 4 to 5 weeks.
